Breakin' Nooz: Geriatric Millenials have a new (better!) name

In 1987, San Diego police discovered the bodies of 37 people in a house. They all had matching haircuts, matching outfits, and infamously - matching Nike sneakers. These were the members of the Heaven’s agate cult, and they had decided to ‘graduate’ from their human forms, so they could ride the Hale-Bopp comet to Heaven.

Led by Marshall Applewhite and Bonnie Nettles (also called ‘Ti and Do’), Heaven’s Gate initially seemed like a bunch of of eccentric alien believers, until they orchestrated one of the most shocking mass suicides in modern history. (Unless you believe them, in which case, they just hitched a ride to Planet Heaven on a spaceship comet and lived happily ever after.)

This has been called one the worst shark attack stories of all time. After their yacht, ‘The Trashman’, sank in a major storm, five crew members were stranded in the middle of the ocean in a tiny inflatable dinghy. That number soon turned to four. Then three. Breakin' Nooz: Singing along at concerts to be... BANNED?

Oh the humanity!

They called it "the Titanic of the sky”. It was the length of five Olympic sized swimming pools and would fly a few hundred metres above the ground transporting wealthy passengers from one side of the Atlantic Ocean to the other, and came complete with a dining room, a Sunday prayer service and even a smoking room. 

But it was essentially a bunch of hydrogen-filled balloons floating in the sky that could catch fire the moment they were exposed to even a small spark...which is exactly what happened on May 6th 1937, when the Hindenburg's 63rd voyage from Frankfurt to New Jersey ended in disaster.

The Hindenburg was the largest airship ever built and its crash remains one of the most famous aircraft disasters in history, thanks to the graphic footage of the explosion and the chilling radio commentary of reporter Herbert Morrison.

Who on earth would CHOOSE to run 217km through the desert in the middle of summer in temperatures of up to 50 degrees Celsius in under 48 hours? In 1987 someone did just that and now it’s become one of the most popular and exclusive ultramarathons in the world.

The first person to put themselves through this ordeal BY CHOICE was Al Arnold. He was almost 50 years old when he set himself the seemingly impossible challenge of running from the lowest point in North America at Badwater Basin, to the highest point in the contiguous United States, at Mount Whitney, by himself, in the middle of summer. He barely survived. And yet, since then, thousands of people have lined up to do the exact same thing.

In April 1994, two groups of holiday makers on the Zambezi River were ambushed by Africa's most deadly mammal - the hippo. The attacks happened 2 days apart and 200km away from each other. But they ended up being connected to each other in a very surprising way…

Each group’s stories is incredible, involving not just hippos but crocodiles, buffalo, lions, hyenas & bloodthirsty ants. But the fact that they were connected by fate/coincidence makes it extra wild.

In 1987 the Royal Family needed to win back the hearts & minds of the commoners who were starting to revere the monarchy less than they had previously. Prince Edward, the youngest of Queen Elizabeth’s kids, came up with what he thought was the perfect solution: have the Windsors dress up in silly costumes & play wacky, slapstick games with celebrities on a TV special that would be broadcast around the world. 

The end result was a bizarre fever dream in which famous faces like John Travolta, Tom Jones & Meatloaf were running around a field dressed up as jesters, potatoes and chess pieces, throwing giant foam hams at each other, while the royals cheered and hooted. Yes, it was messy. No, it hasn’t been depicted in The Crown (yet). 

The whole undignified debacle was a huge embarrassment for the royal family, and a definitive turning point in public sentiment when it came the monarchs. It’s also absolutely flippin’ hilarious and you need to watch the whole show after you listen to this ep!

MORMONS with Jake Howie

In 1988, Arno Funke was a broke, 38-year-old German man with a plan turn his life around. He decided to bankroll his dream of starting a food truck business by becoming…an extortionist. His method was simple: he detonated pipe-bombs in fancy department stores and warned the police that if they didn’t pay his ransom demands, he’d detonate more.

Over the course of six years, Arno, or Dagobert (the German name for Scrooge McDuck), as he was more affectionately known, led the cops on a wild goose chase as his plans to claim his money and outsmart the police became increasingly outlandish and cartoonish. All the while, he was becoming more and more famous and beloved by the people of Germany.

BONUS: Claude Elliott is the REAL Mayor of Gander in Come From Away

On March 23rd, 1911, the luxury passenger ship, the SS Yongala started its 99th voyage from Mackay to Cairns. But much like Betty White and Prince Phillip before her, the SS Yongala didn’t live to see its 100th voyage. Not long after setting sail from Mackay, a tropical storm warning forced all ships to return to port. All ships heeded the message...except the SS Yongala, which never arrived in Cairns and was assumed to have sunk. It would take 47 years before a recreational diver named Bill would find the shipwreck, almost perfectly preserved off the coast of Ayr, Queensland. The ship didn’t make headlines again until 2003 when an American couple took a honeymoon diving trip to the Yongala and only one of them survived.

BONUS: Lewis Hobba will do anything to win a competition

On a Sunday morning in March 1990, two security guards arrived at the prestigious Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston ready to start work, only to find the museum had been robbed overnight. Thirteen artworks were missing and so were the two security guards who’d worked the night shift.

The value of the missing art was around $500 million USD in today’s money, making this heist the largest art theft, and largest property, theft in history.

The suspects included a stoner security guard, disgruntled ex-employees, the Boston Mafia, the IRA and even the museum’s director... but to this day the case has never been solved and the artworks have never been recovered.

The World’s Biggest Art Heist with Kate Wasley

You might have seen the new Netflix series based on this story. Trust us when we tell you the true version of events is more chilling than the fictionalised version... This spookiness starts when Derek and Maria Broaddus buy their dream house, a $1.6 million mansion in New Jersey. Before they move into their new home, menacing letters start appearing in the Broaddus’ mailbox from someone who called themselves “The Watcher”. This mysterious letter writer claimed to have been the house’s guardian for decades, and they threatened to commit violence against Derek, Maria and their three young children.

The creepiest part? The Watcher has still never been found.

The REAL story of The Watcher with Fiona Cox

Possibly our wildest story yet!

On June 10th 1990, British Airways flight 5390 took off from Birmingham en route to Malaga, Spain. 13 minutes into the flight, 6 kilometres up in the sky, the windscreen of the plane's cockpit blew off & Captain Tim Lancaster was sucked out the hole where the window should be.

This week, animal trainer/stand up comedian Emma Malik is telling us about the history of animals in the armed forces & how we ended up in a world where dolphins are trained to (allegedly) kill. 

Turns out, during the early years of the Cold War, the United States and the Soviet Union started using dolphins as part of their naval defence strategies. Over the years, dolphins have been deployed on increasingly complicated missions, and they’ve become such an important part of Russia’s operations that Vladimir Putin himself “auditions” new recruits.

Dolphins trained to kill featuring comedian Emma Malik

In the early 2000’s, a group of artists were evicted from their home to make space for a shopping centre parking lot in Providence, Rhode Island. They were sad to lose their lodgings, and angry to see all the city's residential properties being converted into commercial ones.

This inspired them to run an experiment to find out whether a commercial property, like a shopping centre, could also be used as a residential space.

Initially the plan was to try to live in the Providence Place mall for a week without getting caught…

But 4 years later, the group were still secretly living in the mall in an apartment they’d covertly set up & filled with furniture, appliances & luxury homewares.

Have you heard about that time a tiger shark regurgitated a human arm in the Coogee Aquarium?

It was the afternoon of April 26th, 1935, when the largest shark ever in captivity (we’re calling her Shirley) spewed up a full human arm in front of a dozen witnesses. The arm bore a distinctive tattoo & was identified as belonging to a known Sydney criminal named Jimmy. There are lots of twists & turns in this story & even a high speed boat chase, but how Jimmy's arm ended up in Shirley’s stomach (and what happened to the rest of him) still remains a mystery to this day.

The Shark Arm Murder Mysteries with Turia Pitt

After the hijacked planes crashed into the Twin Towers on the morning of 9/11, the airspace over the USA was closed, and all planes were forced to land.

38 of the 5,000 planes in the air at that time, carrying 7,000 passengers from all over the world, were diverted to the tiny town of Gander in the far-eastern corner of Newfoundland, Canada.

The town’s population instantly doubled, and for the next 5 days locals (Newfies) volunteered to work around the clock to feed, clothe and provide customised care for the "Plane People”, proving the human capacity for kindness and generosity is even greater than the capacity for violence.

Now a major TV series starring Julia Roberts called 'Gaslit', Martha Mitchell was the wife of an important man in President Nixon's administration, which meant she knew too much, and the White House wanted to shut her up. But Martha was right about everything, and the way she was treated ended up in psychologists naming 'The Martha Mitchell Effect' after her, which is basically an official form of gaslighting. On August 4th, 1986, it was discovered that the most expensive painting in Australia, 'The Weeping Woman’ by Pablo Picasso, was missing from the National Gallery of Victoria's collection. Turned out it had been abducted by a cheeky new organisation no-one had ever heard of: the "Australian Cultural Terrorists” (the A.C.T) who were holding the painting ransom. Their demands? Increase funding to the arts, or the painting would be incinerated. 

Was this really a crime? Or was it more of an act of protest? Or a piece of performance art? Whatever the ACT intended it to be viewed as, it’s hilariously funny.

In 1692, in the small colonial village of Salem, Massachusetts, two young girls started experiencing bizarre, convulsive fits. The doctor’s diagnosis? Witchcraft. Over the course of a few months, as more villagers experienced similar strange symptoms, people started accusing their friends and neighbours of practicing black magic. Paranoia spread throughout Salem, and over the following 15 months of mass hysteria more than 200 people were accused, 20 people were executed and 5 people died in prison.

The story of Bhagwan Rajneesh, the Indian guru who established a movement/sex cult that tried to take over the state of Oregon, USA in the 1980s. Bhagwan, his right hand woman Sheela, and their thousands of followers descended on a quiet rural community & proceeded to build their own city-sized commune, complete with its own roads, airport and enough space to house the cult's loyal followers (mostly white, middle class, Western hippies).The group were so determined to build & protect their commune (dedicated to peace and free love) they resorted to rigging elections, plotting murders, & committing the largest bio-terror attack of the century.

On Christmas Eve, 1971, Juliane Koepcke was on a plane flying over the Amazon. Half-way into the one hour flight, the plane flew into a tropical storm, was struck by lightning and split in half. Juliane was sucked out of the plane and fell more than 3km back to earth, landing alone in the rainforest…alive and barely injured.

Juliane then survived the 11 day hike back to civilisation thanks to a combination of her extensive knowledge of the jungle and incredibly good luck.

The half-billion dollar painting that is probably a FAKE

In 2016, 34-year-old Sherri Papini vanished while out jogging. Insisting she must have been ‘taken’, Sherri’s husband Keith Papini organised massive search efforts and wept in TV interviews about wanting her home. And after three weeks, much to the shock of police, Sherri reappeared. Found wandering along the side of a freeway with a chain around her waist, battered, bruised and emaciated with her hair chopped off, Sherri said she’d been abducted by two ‘Hispanic women’ who wanted to sex traffic her.  

Sherri’s return and horrific story made international headlines, but something didn’t seem quite right to police, who quietly set about trying to get to the bottom of the whole thing. And 6 years later, in March 2022, the FBI announced they had finally solved the Sherri Papini case…

There are people in this world who spend literally hundreds of thousands of dollars on wine - sometimes on a single bottle. These wine 'experts' say they can taste the difference between a fancy bottle and a sack of goon, but... Rudy definitely proved they can't. He made a bunch of wine in his kitchen, slapped some snobby labels on the bottles and SOLD THEM TO RICH IDIOTS FOR MILLIONS OF DOLLARS. And not only did they buy the wine, they INSISTED they loved it, and that it was the 'best wine' they'd ever tasted. Gotta love rich idiots!

Thought to be one of the inspirations behind Quentin Tarantino's film Inglourious Basterds, Nancy Wake was one woman you did not want to mess with.

The 2019 College Admissions Scandal

Imagine if two stars as big as Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie were kidnapped, forced to remarry, and given no choice but to start making movies together for a crazy dictator. 

In 1978, that actually happened. 

Choi Eun-hee was the most famous movie star in South Korea. Shin Sang-ok was the most famous director. They had a 'Brangelina' level marriage, with millions of people invested in their famous relationship and the movies they made as a mega-famous couple.

But when they got divorced and stopped working together, one man decided that simply would not do. Kim Jong-il - son of the dictator of North Korea - had Choi and Shin kidnapped and brought to him. After a bit of light torture and 're-education', it was announced that they would remarry and start making movies again, all for the pleasure and good publicity of the North Korean people. And with the options being 'pretend to be married and make movies or DIE'... well, Choi and Shin got to work making movies. For YEARS.

When Dorothy Stratten arrived in Hollywood as a shy, naive 18-year-old, she had never even been on a plane before. By 19, she had been named Playboy Magazine's 1980 Playmate of the Year, and started booking acting jobs in film and TV, with many believing she would be the first Playmate to achieve 'mainstream' success. But by 20, less than two years after she arrived in LA, Dorothy Stratten was dead.

If you were a gazillionaire, and you wanted to buy a Picasso or a Pollock for a ridiculous amount of money, you went to the Knoedler Gallery and spoke to Ann Freedman. But everything fell apart when someone had their artwork valued at by an expert, and was informed they had spent $17 million on a FAKE. And they weren’t the only one - turns out Ann Freedman had been selling fake paintings to everyone in town for years. So where did the paintings come from? How did she have so many?
